MIDLAND INSTITUTIONS. You build the list.

Every town's got 'em: Those places or 'things' unique to that place. We have our share in Midland, too. As we put together 'A History of Character: The Story of Midland, Texas,' you can help by sharing what you think deserves to be on any list of Midland's institutions. To get started, my list would start with the Yucca, Murrays and yes, even Rosa's ... your turn. And thanks in advance for your help.

Why Rosa's? Think about it: It's one of the most common meeting places in the city. Instead of asking where are we going to eat, many families and friends just say, 'Which Rosa's are we going to tonight?"

Currently, our Midland Institutions list shapes up as such:
-- Murray's
-- The Yucca Theater
-- Risa's.

But we've got more.

My list would have to include:

Jumburrito
Oscar's
KD's
Clarke's and Winfred's
Mummers (piggybacking on the Yucca)
The Bar

Don't leave out the Chief and Fiesta Drive-In theaters. Not to mention, running up and down Ohio Street for high school kids from King Burger to the carousel burger joint. I can't remember the name of it... but we wore out Ohio Street getting there!

And what it was like when Lee High School opened, for those who only knew Midland High School! I was born and raised in Midland. My mother, Bobie Jean Gibbins McDaniel graduated exactly 30 years before me from Midland High School. Her father, my grandfather, was instrumental in the oil business in those early years. You have lots of folks to interview! What a history!?

I have to second the motion for Dennis the Menace Park (wonderful memories from a theater class I took one summer of elementary school). I'd also add Don's Delicatessan (if it's still there) on Midkiff Rd., Luigi's, and Texas Burger near Midkiff and Wadley.

Parks that turn into swimmin' holes after a big rain.

The carousel burger joint was Burger Train, Mary Jean. Best Cherry Vanilla Cokes and "soapapillas" (really fried biscuits) in the world.

Other institutions:
Little 'A' Street Park (as opposed to the big one),
The old Midland Community Theatre (across from Dennis the Menace),
The Scharbauer Hotel (the frosted root beers!)
Grammer-Murphy
Cole Park Zoo

Great site!
